Pre Production

Synima worked closely with the client to get the script just right. The concepts and language we use around both ADHD and ID are sensitive so we wanted to make sure we hit the right notes. Once the script was tied down we set to work storyboarding the video. The client had asked for a relatable video with a central character, Sam. Sam would support the voice over by demonstrating some of the scenarios and behaviours being described, as well as conveying some of the emotional weight of ADHD and ID.

Animation

Our animator has been experimenting with the technique of using lighting in 2D animation. The effect he achieved seemed to round off the edges of the flat shapes, giving them the illusion of depth. When the client asked us to make a relatable video on this subject we felt that this technique had found its natural home. The animation is simple, but the lighting effects give the video a perceived depth that draws the viewer into Sam’s life.

So…did it work?

This video was one of a series of wellness videos that Synima produced for free to help tackle the rising number of people present with issues in this area of mental health. The videos were used to raise awareness through campaigns lead by UCL, who felt they were perfect for communicating the seriousness of the issue in a relatable way.
