We chose a very limited palette for this animation, with a heavy emphasis on white and just a couple of accent colours, grey and blue. A challenge of this style was getting the white buildings to stand out from the largely white surroundings. To achieve a strong sense of 3D we included a low light source to achieve the effect of a setting sun. This produced long shadows on the buildings and trees and bathed the white features in a warm glow that gives the video a lot of its final character. Animation tends to be brash and bright so this subtle lighting effect is unusual and very evocative.

So…did it work?

Honeywell and Tridium were very pleased with this video which was very different to anything we had produced for them in the past. They loved the concept of the town evolving as the business has evolved and the subtlety of the ending with its visual reference to ‘the cloud’. Synima’s long working relationship with Honeywell has produced many standout videos but our first animation together remains a firm favourite.
