Pre Production

Synima came up with several 2D animation styles for this production and worked with the EU to choose the most appropriate. The script worked hard to focus on the benefits of declaring work to employers, workers and society in general, while avoiding the urge to lecture. We also auditioned for a soft, mildly accented voice to deliver the message to reflect both the positive approach and the European nature of the initiative.

Animation

The 2D animation produced for this video is bright, bold and engaging. Animating in this style gives us extraordinary freedom to switch from concept to concept as the voice over directs us and we took full advantage of that in this production. We were able to move from thought bubbles showing character’s inner thoughts into hard statistics. Emotionally we move from melancholy to optimism as the benefits of declaring work are illustrated.

So…did it work?

The EU loved this video which they felt communicated their message very well and hit the right tone. The video was distributed among employers and jobseekers, across the internet where the client felt the message was heard. Undeclared work is not a problem that can be completely eradicated but it was felt that the video would have some impact on people whose minds were not made up on the subject. Synima felt the video showcased our ability to tell a complex story with simple animation and a convincing voice-over.
