    Anatomy of the Shot: Creating Isometric 3D Animation for PACT

    In our ongoing series that dissects the technical and creative processes behind standout visual moments, we explore the development of an isometric 3D animation created for PACT (Partnership for Carbon Transparency).

    The Brief

    PACT, a global nonprofit dedicated to the sharing of accurate and trustworthy carbon data, approached us with a challenge: create a visually compelling way to illustrate complex carbon data transparency concepts. The goal was to develop an animation that would help companies understand how carbon emissions data can be tracked, shared, and ultimately reduced through their platform. 

    We opted for an isometric 3D animation style – a technique that combines the clarity of technical illustration with the engaging qualities of animation. This approach allowed us to create a visual metaphor of a manufacturing facility that processes data instead of physical materials. 

    The Technical Process

    Creating this animation involved several distinct technical phases, each building upon the previous to construct the final piece. Let’s break down the anatomy of this shot:

    Phase 1: Blocking Stage

    The foundation of any 3D animation begins with 3D blocking. This is the skeletal framework that establishes the basic geometry and proportions of our industrial facility. At this stage, we focused on: 

    • Creating the base platform that would house our data processing facility 

    • Blocking out major structural elements like smokestacks and crane mechanisms 

    • Establishing the isometric perspective that would be maintained throughout 

    • Mapping the flow lines (dotted paths) that would later represent data movement 

    The blocking phase is crucial for determining scale, composition, and basic spatial relationships before investing time in detailed modeling and texturing.

    Phase 2: Basic Modeling & Layout

    With the blocking approved, we refined the model with increased geometric detail: 

    • Added structural definition to the main platform and facility 

    • Developed more detailed representations of the factory components 

    • Refined the smokestacks and crane mechanisms 

    • Enhanced the base geometry of each element while maintaining the isometric perspective 

    This phase transforms the 3D blocking into recognizable forms, giving clients a clearer vision of the final piece while still allowing for efficient revisions.

    Phase 3: Color, Texture & Data Visualization Integration

    The animation begins to come alive with the addition of: 

    • A clean, modern color palette featuring blues and teals that align with PACT’s brand identity 

    • Gradient effects that add dimension while maintaining a contemporary look 

    • Installation of data visualization elements – the bar charts and pie charts that represent carbon metrics 

    • The beginning of lighting effects that enhance the dimensional quality 

    At this stage, we began to see how the animation would function not just as a 3D environment, but as an information design tool – with each element serving both aesthetic and communicative purposes.

    Phase 4: Final Refinement with Alert Systems & Animation Cues

    The final technical phase incorporated: 

    • Warning/alert symbols at key points in the data flow, representing carbon hotspots or areas for improvement 

    • Additional database structures (the cylindrical elements) showing how information is stored and processed 

    • Enhanced connection lines between elements, visualizing the flow of carbon data through the system 

    • Refined lighting effects that add polish while maintaining clarity 

    These final elements transform the piece from a static model into a dynamic system ready for animation, where each component plays a role in telling the story of carbon data transparency. 

    The Animation Approach 

    With the technical build complete, our animation sequence followed the journey of carbon data: 

    1. Beginning with data collection (represented by the input mechanisms on the platform) 

    2. Following through processing stages (the factory components) 

    3. Analyzing and categorizing information (visualization charts) 

    4. Identifying problem areas (alert systems) 

    5. Implementing solutions (crane mechanism represents intervention) 

    The isometric perspective provided two key advantages: maintaining clarity even with complex movements, and allowing viewers to see multiple systems operating simultaneously without confusion.

    Why This Approach Works 

    The isometric style strikes a perfect balance for PACT’s needs: 

    • Clear visualization of complex concepts: The simplified 3D rendering makes abstract data flows tangible 

    • Professional yet approachable: The clean design communicates technical competence without overwhelming viewers 

    • Scalable visual language: Elements can be easily adapted for different aspects of PACT’s carbon transparency initiative 

    • Engaging without distraction: The animation captures attention while keeping focus on the message 

    This project demonstrates how thoughtful 3D animation can transform complex sustainability concepts into engaging visual narratives. By meticulously building from blocking to finished animation, we created not just a video, but a visual system that helps PACT communicate their vital mission of enabling carbon transparency across global industries. 

    The technical approach – moving systematically through blocking, modeling, texturing, and final refinement – ensured that every element served both visual and communicative purposes, resulting in an animation that’s as informative as it is visually compelling.
