    Collaborating with AI – Scriptwriting

How writers can collaborate with AI to inspire and improve their scripts.

Whether its to guide people through a story, explain ideas in further detail, outline events or to increase accessibility – scripts are an important part of any video. As language processing algorithms continue to improve, a single text prompt is all AI needs to generate a fully realized script with information, humour, and a coherent structure. While AI still struggles with fact checking, new concepts and the ability to form a unique voice, the instantaneous feedback AI provides can spur creativity and compel writers to improve.

AI language models such as ChatGPT have dazzled the world with their capabilities – with options ranging from maintaining a conversation, drafting emails, creating content, writing code, and formulating scripts from a single prompt or theme. AI language models have been trained to find connections and patterns within the billions of words they’re fed, with data pouring in from books, academic texts and articles all contributing to its ability generate predicted text.

Currently, AI models still churn out misinformation, which is a concern if the generated text is confidently left unchecked. Fake cases have already been cited by ChatGPT in legal documents, and schools have been debating whether to outright ban the technology as students use it to answer essay questions. The purpose of the technology is not to replace a search engine or provide accurate information however…

…its purpose is to improve upon and generate writing, and collaborating with it can bring a host of benefits along with drawbacks.

One way in which AI technology can help writer’s is to replace a blank page suffering from writer’s block with an array of ideas to bounce off from. Trying to muster up inspiration from nothing is a frustrating task and often amounts to little progress, but with AI, you can push past that overwhelming starting point and jump straight into the action. Another benefit of AI is its ability to take a list of plot points and generate a script surrounding it, allowing you to judge your narrative’s flow and progression in context. If you ask the AI to slightly rewrite your script, you can gain a new perspective as if reading your own work for the first time, which leads to unbiased examination.

However, AI struggles with generating information from the last few years, so if a company requests a script for a new launch or concept, a language model will have difficulty crafting something compelling on its own. The connection a scriptwriter forms with a brand or idea is irreplaceable, and getting to know a company personally will always generate a more emotive and unique script that is accurate to who they are. Extracting the most potential from AI is achieved through human collaboration – by receiving instant ideas and feedback, a writer can broaden their options and get a feel for what works best.
